Merthyr Bus Statio – Guardrail Fencing

Merthyr Bus Station - Guardrail Fencing

Install Designed and Tested Vehicle and Pedestrian Barriers
Methyr Bus Station Guard Railings
In May 2020 Perimeter Fencing Solutions Ltd were approached by Morgan Sindall to supply, install designed and tested vehicle and pedestrian barriers, armco barriers and some standard pedestrian guardrail fencing.

Morgan Sindall are one of the largest construction companies in the UK and Perimeter Fencing Solutions are currently working on several of their sites in Wales.  The Merthyr Bus station project is quite unique giving to the fact the building is purely electric to reduce the carbon footprint.  There is no gas or other fossil fuel supply to the bus station.  This means that all the needs of the building – for heating, hot water and so on – are covered by green renewable sources.

Design, Supply and Install Guard Railings

Morgan Sindall approached Perimeter Fencing Solutions to aide in the design, supply and installation specifically for the pedestrian guard rail which had to take crowd loading and the vehicle barriers which were required to protect the public from the buses and be able to take the impact of a bus travelling at 30mph.  We met up several times with the projects team to discuss the requirements.  After several meetings it was concluded that the pedestrian barrier needed to meet P4 type guard rail and the vehicle barrier needed to comply with N2W4 for road restraint systems.

Now that the parameters of the design had been set Perimeter Fencing Solutions then set about developing this detail into a workable design and specification.  This was made more difficult as both guard rails were being base plated on top of a concrete retaining wall that was raking, had several changes of direction and was radiused on the bottom section.  Perimeter Fencing Solutions over came this by carrying out a thorough site survey for the first retaining wall but due delays on site and the lead time on the vehicle guard rail the design of the second retaining wall had to be done purely from CAD drawings.  As the design of the vehicle restraint barrier developed the client felt it looked too overbearing and asked if we could make it more appealing.  We did this by designing a system which replicated the look of the standard pedestrian guard rail, but with bigger sections of steel so it could withstand the impact of a bus.

Originally, we were tasked with getting all the fencing designed, manufactured, and installed by November of 2020.  However, due to delays on site the completion date moved to Summer of 2021 but we had finished the majority of the install prior to Christmas and handed over the project on time and snag free.  This was testament to the Perimeter Fencing Solutions installation teams and management given this was during the height of the COVID – 19 pandemic and all the complications and restrictions it placed on the project.

“Perimeter Fencing Solutions undertook the metalwork package on Merthyr Tydfil Bus Interchange, which included retaining wall and ground level guardrails, as well as vehicle parapet and road restraint systems. It was a challenging project with a high spec design to cope with the constant interface between live buses and pedestrians.

With models showing that the bus station can expect a daily turnaround of 520 buses per day, it was imperative that the metalwork systems were of the highest standards. Perimeter Fencing worked tirelessly with us during the early stages of procurement to ensure the design brief was achieved, with public safety always highest on the agenda.

The senior management team are always amenable, ready to react to any queries and were more than happy to attend site to review any queries, as well as assist with additional client requests as the project progressed.

I would certainly look to use Perimeter again on future projects, we at Morgan Sindall have also awarded them Sub-Contractor of the Year award 2020 for their outstanding works across all our live projects”.  – Derwyn Nicholas (Morgan Sindall).

This was a fantastic project to work on and we achieve handover time even with taking on covid restrictions and social distancing.

WHAT SOME OF OUR CUSTOMERS HAVE TO SAY

Gateway 4 Project, Armthorpe - Readie Construction

Readie Construction was appointed as main contractor to deliver the 25 acre site, Gateway 4 scheme at Armthorpe in a 34-week programme which is expected to be completed in October 2020, which will consist of a 409,000 sq ft distribution centre with large yards on either side, 38 loading doors and extensive lorry parking for 83 HGVs.  This state-of-the-art distribution centre is being developed by Trebor Developments and their partner Hillwood.  The site has direct access from the A630, less than a mile from Junction 4 of the M18.

Perimeter fencing solutions worked with Readie Construction Ltd to help construct this new facility, installing the security fencing, acoustic fencing, timber fencing and gates along with rising barriers and turnstiles.  This was the second project that we have worked with in conjunction with Readie and now have several live projects we are currently working on with them also.

There are many security systems on the market and with our extensive knowledge in the security sector; we pride ourselves on delivering the correct product to suit the clients needs within budget and within the programme required.

We supplied and installed 675m of 2.4m high v-mesh security fencing to the boundary of the unit, which included several access gates.

We also supplied acoustic fencing at 2m and 2.5m high to the boundary of the site where the noise of the HGV’s had the potential to impact upon neighbouring properties.  The product we supplied and installed in these areas was Ransford’s prefabricated reflective acoustic panels on steel posts.  Ransford’s are a leading manufacturer of acoustic fencing and we use the prefabricated panels to save on installation time on site.

The benefits of this acoustic fencing are:

  • Environmentally friendly timber construction
  • Flexible system where varying heights and widths can be achieved
  • Meets stringent Highway Agency requirements
  • Category B3
  • Laboratory tested sound reduction up to 29 Db
  • Superficial mass ranges available (6.9 kg/m2 up to 11.66 kg/m2 if required

We also installed several manual rising arm barriers to the vehicle access points on site, these were installed for the security on site to control the flow of vehicles into and out of the site.

The project also required two turnstiles to be installed within the perimeter fencing to control employees’ access into site.  These were installed within a few hours, due to them being mechanically lifted into position by one of our specialist hiab delivery vehicles.

This project commenced in March 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic was in full effect which meant we had to adapt to new ways of working and ensure there were safe systems of work to protect both our installers and the other trades on site.  Despite this we still got the materials delivered and installed on time and in a safe manner.

Lee Chaulk the Commercial Director for Readie Construction Ltd commented:

‘’ This was the second project Perimeter Fencing Solutions had undertaken with Readie construction.  We have worked alongside Richard Salmon for several years now and he has always delivered the projects on time and within budget.’’
