Haverfordwest School, Morgan Sindall - Temporary Site Hoarding
It is set to be built on the site of the former Sir Thomas Picton School, most of which has now been demolished.
The new-build Haverfordwest High VC School will accommodate 1500 pupils aged 11-16 and 250 sixth form pupils.
The planned completion date for all works on site, including the leisure facilities, is 2022.
Pembrokeshire County Council’s technical in-house team appointed the contractor Morgan Sindall to develop the design of the new school.
Externally, the scheme will boast extensive sports facilities including playing fields, a WRU 3G standard rugby pitch and tennis facilities as well as parking, coach drop-off and road alterations into the existing site.
The project also includes a separate sports and leisure facility, which will be fully available to the school during school hours and members of the public outside school hours.
Perimeter Fencing Solutions were one of three companies approached to submit a competitive tender for the supply and install of 1.5km of Temporary Site Hoarding to the perimeter of the existing school.
Temporary Site Hoarding is an essential part of most construction projects because it prevents the public from entering a live construction site which is dangerous. It also gives the Main Contractor peace of mind knowing that materials and plant will be kept safe from theft and damage.
Perimeter Fencing Solutions we delighted to be successful with our bid and appointed in June 2020 for the supply and install of the Temporary Site Hoarding and 12 site entrance swing gates.
Morgan Sindall have a very thorough design process and the design was at the higher end of hoarding mainly as this project is on the Pembrokeshire coast.
The timber posts were 225mm x 75mm and spaced at 2.4m centres into concrete foundations 450mm diameter and 1000mm deep. The centres of the posts did decrease to 1.9m centres on ends and corners. We installed 4no. 100mm x 50mm support rails to the posts which were overlapped for added strength.
Once the timber framework was in place we then fixed 18mm Smart-ply Site Protect Hoarding to the rails with screws at a maximum of 250mm centres.
To cover the fixing joints we installed a 150mm x 22mm top and bottom capping strip and a 50mm x 22mm vertical strip.
There were areas of the site near the access road and service rooms to the existing school where there was a heavy presence of live services, mainly electric and gas. We were given service drawings from the land survey team however it was important that our trained operatives scanned every metre of the hoarding line with our CAT 4 Scanners and Generators. This method would give us a fairly accurate reading on location of services and depth.
As well as the Temporary Site Hoarding the site required multiple access areas for material deliveries therefore we manufactured and installed robust Steel Swing Gates in varying widths from 4m to 8m opening.
Of course, it was also important to make sure staff and visitors had a safe entry onto site therefore manufactured and installed Steel Pedestrian Access Gates. The steel pedestrian gates have been manufactured with self-closing hinges and a digital key pad meaning that if a person enters site the gates will always close shut behind them meaning security is kept at all times.
The programme given to Perimeter Fencing Solutions was extremely tights, just 5 weeks meaning we had to work safe, fast and smart. We used multiple teams on different areas of this huge site and we are pleased to say all works were completed to a very high standard and on time.
Project Manager Gareth Rees said, ‘I was very impressed with the management of this project delivered by Perimeter Fencing Solutions, the team worked extremely hard to deliver this very difficult project over the line for Morgan Sindall’
